Letter to John Morrison (By American Dolphin)

If you follow me on Twitter, you must know by now that I am a big John Morrison fan. I became a JoMo fan back when he was Johnny Nitro in MNM. I was amazed at his in-ring skills, combining a ground-and-pound attack and a high-flying arsenal, and at his cocky, over-the-top A-lister character. However, I thought he was alright. Nothing big, you know? He was a decent superstar, but I didn’t mind him being a midcarder.

I didn’t become a real Mofo, or a JoMoSapien, until 2007 when he was drafted to ECW via the WWE Supplemental Draft. A week into his ECW career, he replaced a “missing” Chris Benoit and defeated CM Punk to capture the ECW Championship. I didn’t think much of it, as I could only wonder why Benoit wasn’t there to face off against Punk in what would have been an extremely technical, competitive, fun match to watch. However, Morrison (or Nitro back then) impressed me during the match, demolishing Punk with a corkscrew neckbreaker with Punk hung-up on the second rope.

A few weeks after his ECW title win, Nitro evolved into something greater: John Morrison. As he said in one of his “Palace of Wisdom” segments, he dropped the “unf,” the hair highlights, but still kept the fur coat and his A-lister personality. It was a bit toned down, but it still worked for this viewer. Morrison continued to improve during the next few weeks, picking up a few wins and having some good promo time – but most importantly, he improved me. I was amazed at how a midcarder in a tag team could go to a should-be main eventer in such a short time.

As time went on, Morrison dropped the ECW Title to Punk. It was alright to me. Not the way that I would have liked it, but with him being suspended for breaking the wellness policy, it made sense. Morrison was then put into a tag team with The Miz. I hated The Miz back then. He was annoying and not much fun to watch. In fact, this tag team is what made me become a Miz fan. It also solidified my status as a JoMoSapien. Every week, I would go to WWE.com, surfing for the newest episode of “The Dirt Sheet.” From poking fun at CM Punk’s childhood to “Fatty” Dreamer, Miz and Morrison always made me laugh.

After a successful run as tag team champs, the Miz/Morrison tag team would come to an end. After all, all great teams eventually have to come to an end so that both men can grow into their own character. Problem is – Morrison already had one. After MizMo split, I was sure that JoMo was going to become the next main eventer. After being drafted to SmackDown (which I always think as “The Land of Opportunities”), I thought for sure that Morrison was going to be the next breakout star. He had the in-ring skill, he had the looks, and he had the “it factor.”

However, that never happened. This JoMoSapien kept waiting and waiting as Morrison delivered great match after great match. A glimpse of hope came when Morrison defeated Rey Mysterio to win the Intercontinental Championship, but after dropping it, Morrison went back to being a midcarder. Eventually, JoMo was drafted to Raw. I didn’t like the move as I thought that Raw was overcrowded with big main event stars like Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, John Cena and Shawn Michaels, but I still maintained my hope as I knew that even if JoMo was put in a horrible angle, he would always eventually deliver.

Then, Morrison beat Sheamus at the TLC pay-per-view to secure himself a WWE Championship match against his former partner – The Miz. I was excited. Very excited. I thought that it could lead a WWE Championship angle to WrestleMania. I really did. It seemed like WWE had finally given Morrison “the nod.” However, this nod turned out to be WWE shaking its head at Morrison as he would get his WWE Title match on the first Raw of 2011. It turns out that Morrison lost to The Miz. Morrison would get one more shot at the WWE Title at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. As always, he delivered, with his amazing spots and crossbody off the top of the chamber. But as always, he eventually crashed and burned.

Then came the reports. “WWE Unhappy with Morrison,” “John Morrison in the Doghouse,” “John Morrison Unhappy with Current Situation.” These reports continue until today. However, this time, we don’t know which ones are true and which ones are not. We can only read them and hope for which ones are true. Will Morrison go to TNA? Maybe so, but I hope not. He’s too good for TNA and I hope that he stays in WWE. Will that happen?

Probably not, but one can dream.

One can dream, and I dream that Morrison will eventually get his chance to be the king of the hill, because I know he would make a damn good one. So, Morrison, if you are truly leaving: thank you. Thank you for the memories and thank you very much.
